Weekend things to do: Florida Derby fashion, a great Cure tribute band in Delray Beach, NSYNC vs. Backstreet at Broward Center
Serious question: What does one wear to the Florida Derby?
The thoroughbred race, known more formally as the Curlin Florida Derby, returns to Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach on Saturday, and I’m flummoxed (not to be confused with the racehorse of the same name).
I am familiar with the fashionable crowds that attend the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, sartorially splendid and seersuckered, feathery wide-brimmed hats at a rakish angle. Surely the Florida Derby — the most important prep race for the famed Kentucky Derby — makes its own, distinctive fashion statement, right?
You know how I am about tradition. (And what is traditional without parody?) Most importantly, the Carousel Club at Gulfstream Park is hosting a Florida Derby party that includes a hat and fashion contest (and, helpfully, half-price mojito pitchers from noon to 4 p.m.). What’s a winning outfit look like?
Of course, you also may need to consider this for your Florida Derby watch party. The race, a culmination of a 14-race card on Saturday, is scheduled to be televised on CNBC and streamed on Peacock. The scheduled post time is 6:42 p.m.
Unless I receive different recommendations, my working outfit right now is appropriately South Florida, kind of a technicolor dreamcoat with coordinating capri pants (thanks, Mike McDaniel). Haven’t decided on a hat yet. My wife is calling it a “Tommy Bahama-Lilly Pulitzer car crash,” but what’s her point? For information on the racing and the parties, visit FloridaDerby.com and CarouselClub.com.
THURSDAY
Thursday I’m in Love: For pure fun this weekend, it’s going to be hard to beat Thursday’s free concert in downtown Delray Beach by Cure tribute band Lovesong. Led by Rusty Wilmot, with his rebellious Robert Smith hair and rosy slapdash of lipstick, the band offers a deeply satisfying simulation of hits including “Friday I’m in Love,” “Boys Don’t Cry,” “Just Like Heaven,” “In Between Days” and, of course, “Lovesong.” Part of the Delray Beach DDA’s monthly Twilight Concert series, the show runs from 6:30 to 9 p.m. (gates open at 6 p.m.). Visit DelrayOldSchoolSquare.com.
Lose your head: The smash Broadway musical “Six” — a girl-group retelling of the six wives of Henry VIII — is at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in West Palm Beach, with performances at 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets start at $55+, but very few remain. Visit Kravis.org.
Boys are back: Whether you came up on Team NSYNC or Team Backstreet, expect to hear the boy-band hits that won you over when NSYNC’s Joey Fatone and Backstreet Boys’ AJ McLean bring the A Legendary Night Tour to the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Fort Lauderdale at 8 p.m. Thursday. A quick perusal of previous setlists checks the boxes, with NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye,” “Tearin’ Up My Heart” and “It’s Gonna Be Me” joined by BSB’s “I Want It That Way,” “Everybody” and “Larger Than Life.” Tickets start at $44.50+ at BrowardCenter.org.

Tickets cost $30 and are available at the door or on the Eventbrite page. Visit Facebook.com/BrittanyBraveComedy.
