UN warns attacks on journalists threaten press freedom in Afghanistan
United Nations said on World Press Freedom Day that attacks on journalists are attacks on freedom of expression, stressing the urgent need for reliable information and independent media worldwide.
The UN called on governments and societies to defend press freedom and democratic values, warning that access to verified information is essential for stable and resilient societies.
Marked annually on May 3 by the UN and UNESCO, the day highlights the importance of media independence, journalist safety, and governments’ obligations under international human rights law.
In Afghanistan, the day comes as media freedom faces severe restrictions, with censorship, arrests, and pressure on journalists increasing since the Taliban returned to power.
According to the Afghanistan Journalists Center, at least 150 violations of media freedom and journalists’ rights were recorded over the past year, including threats and detentions.
At least four journalists remain in detention, underscoring concerns about the shrinking space for independent reporting and public access to information.
Reporters Without Borders says Afghanistan ranks among the most restrictive environments for journalists, citing widespread censorship, economic collapse of media outlets, and declining international support.
RSF also highlights the disproportionate impact on female journalists, many of whom have been barred from work, restricted in movement, or forced into exile, reducing women’s presence in media.
Richard Bennett has called for the immediate and unconditional release of detained journalists, warning that media workers operate under fear, intimidation, and growing legal uncertainty.
He stressed that female journalists face additional barriers, including discrimination, dress requirements, and limitations on their professional activities, further eroding press freedom.
Richard Lindsay also said Afghan journalists continue their vital work under difficult conditions, emphasizing the importance of protecting freedom of expression and supporting independent media.
He noted that journalists play a key role in reflecting public concerns and amplifying voices that might otherwise remain unheard.
UNICEF and other UN bodies warn that restricting media access has broader social consequences, limiting awareness, education, and access to life-saving information, especially for vulnerable communities.
They emphasize that independent journalism is critical for informing the public, supporting humanitarian efforts, and strengthening resilience in crisis-affected societies.
