Don Mattingly era in Philadelphia begins with win over Giants
Tuesday marked the beginning of the Don Mattingly era in Philadelphia. And it got off to a good start, as the Phillies defeated the San Francisco Giants at Citizens Bank Park by a final score of 7-0.
Jesús Luzardo had a very encouraging start, working around just a Heliot Ramos leadoff double in the third and a Luis Arráez double in the fourth. The Arráez double would be the last baserunner Luzardo allowed all night.
The Phillies scored first in the bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded and one out, Brandon Marsh hit a sacrifice fly to score Trea Turner from third, putting the team up 1-0.
However, it was in the bottom of the sixth that the Phillies broke the game open. After a Turner infield single and a Kyle Schwarber walk, Bryce Harper doubled to drive in Turner. Adolis García then doubled to score two more, putting the Phillies up 4-0, and chasing Giants starter Tyler Mahle from the game. After a Brandon Marsh pop out and a Bryson Stott walk, Alec Bohm hit an RBI double of his own to make it a 5-0 game.
Luzardo, meanwhile, retired the last 11 batters he faced, looking much more like his 2025 self. He threw just 86 pitches across seven dominant innings, allowing no runs on two hits, walking none while striking out eight. With this performance, he became the first Phillies starting pitcher to complete seven innings this season.
The Phillies tacked on two more runs in the eighth. Marsh led off the inning with a single. Two outs and a stolen base later, he scored on an RBI single by Justin Crawford. After a Rafael Marchán walk, Turner singled for his fourth hit of the night, driving in Crawford. This made the score 7-0 Phillies, where it would stay.
Orion Kerkering threw a 1-2-3 eighth inning, and Tim Mayza pitched a ninth to match, officially making the Phillies 1-0 under interim manager Don Mattingly.
The Phillies are now 10-19. They still have a ways to go if they want to climb out of the early hole they’ve dug for themselves. But Tuesday’s game, with a new skipper, was at least a place to start.
Wednesday night should feature a premier pitching matchup – if the rain holds out. Cristopher Sánchez will take the ball for Philadelphia against Logan Webb for the Giants. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. ET.
