Alonso Goes Yard In O’s Win
The Baltimore Orioles beat the Houston Astros (11-19) by a score of 5-3 in front of 13,233 fans at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. This is not the Astros team that we have witnessed over the past years as the are mired in last place in the AL West and hold the worst record in the American League. The Orioles, however, continue to stay at or near the .500 mark for the season in an American League that features just four teams with a winning record.
Shane Baz (1-2) made the start and finished one out away from a quality start. The righty threw 98 pitches, 65 for strikes, in allowing a run on 6 hits. The run was the result of a Brice Matthews solo homerun in the fifth inning. Baz walked 1 and struck out 6 as well. He left the game with two runners on and two outs in the sixth and it took just 5 pitches for Rico Garcia to strike out Dustin Harris and get the Orioles out of the inning.
Baltimore held a 4-1 lead at the end of six innings. Two runs crossed the plate in the first on a Gunnar Henderson double followed by a one-out RBI single by Adley Rutschman and a two-out RBI double by Samuel Basallo.
With Taylor Ward on base via a one-out walk in the fifth inning, Pete Alonso hit his fourth homerun on the year. That two-out homer travelled 380 ft. to right center at a speed of 104 mph.
In the seventh, Henderson walked, stole second base and scored on Rutschman’s RBI single to center.
The bullpen bent but didn’t break in preserving the win for Baz. After opening the eighth inning by allowing a Christian Walker double, Anthony Nunez allowed two more hits which resulted in two runs for the Astros. He did record two strikeouts, however, giving him 18 total against 56 batters faced (32%) on the year.
Ryan Helsley recorded his seventh save of the season by pitching a clean ninth inning.
