'I thought': What Michael Carrick said about Kobbie Mainoo after dazzling display vs Brentford
Manchester United moved one step closer to a return to the UEFA Champions League with a crucial Premier League win over Brentford on Monday night.
Casemiro fired United ahead before Benjamin Sesko doubled their lead.
Brentford pulled one back but United deservedly claimed all three points.
United head coach Michael Carrick was full of praise for Kobbie Mainoo after another outstanding midfield display.
He said after the game (via ManUtd.com): “I thought on the back of the Chelsea game, where he was particularly good and showed similar things, with a bit of everything.
“His build-up play, his taking of the ball, his creation and starting the attacks, he’s so effective with that. But definitely, his duels, his 1v1s, recovery runs and back-tackling – over the last two games he’s taken that up a level.
“It’s great to see that he can do it. We know that he can do it. We’re trying to give him more responsibility as the games go on. We’re still not expected too much of him and understand and try to help him a bit, but he’s doing great at the moment.”
Man United need to build around Mainoo
The 20-year-old had the Old Trafford crowd on their feet when he glided past four Brentford players and surged into the penalty area.
He rounded the goalkeeper and laid a golden chance on a plate for Amad Diallo, but the Ivorian could only win a corner.
A better finish would have earned Mainoo what could have been the assist of the season.
The youngster repeatedly won back possession with his aggressive sliding tackles and intelligent interceptions.
He completed four tackles and won an impressive eight duels during the game.
The Red Devils are expected to revamp their midfield this summer, with Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte both tipped to leave.
Mainoo’s last two performances have sent a clear message that United must build their future midfield around him.
When he is on song, no other central midfielder in his age bracket can match his level.
