Carrick leaves Amorim embarrassed after stunning Man United transformation in one key area
Manchester United have strung together back-to-back Premier League victories and now stand just one win away from sealing qualification for the UEFA Champions League.
United head coach Michael Carrick deserves enormous credit for unlocking the full potential of this squad after replacing Ruben Amorim in January.
Midfield was clearly the biggest weakness during the turbulent Amorim spell.
He opted for a pivot of Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes this season, forcing Kobbie Mainoo to stay on the bench.
Despite mounting criticism, Amorim stubbornly refused to change his approach.
Fernandes and Casemiro were still producing moments of individual brilliance, but as a midfield pairing they lacked defensive balance.
Carrick scrapped the back-three system, restored Mainoo to the starting XI and pushed Fernandes into a more advanced role.
The results have been immediate and may leave the former manager red-faced.
Kobbie Mainoo, Casemiro and Fernandes has been sensational over the last 13 games.
Particularly, Mainoo has taken his game to another level.
He produced a Man of the Match display against Chelsea and was outstanding once again versus Brentford yesterday. The only player arguably better than him was his midfield partner Casemiro.
Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville said during the Brentford clash: “Kobbie Mainoo and Casemiro have been the best two players for Man Utd tonight.”
Casemiro has now bagged nine league goals this season, and no other holding midfielder has been as influential in the final third.
Mainoo drove forward with the ball, glided past opponents and repeatedly drew applause for his aggressive tackling.
It is clear that Carrick has turned a glaring weakness into one of their biggest strengths in just a matter of weeks.
