Afghan Refugees in Qatar Camp Stuck Between Return and Uncertain Relocation
Afghan refugees in Qatar face uncertainty as they weigh forced return against possible relocation, amid a worsening humanitarian crisis.
Afghan refugees living in a camp near Doha say they are trapped between returning to Afghanistan and possible relocation to a third country, with neither option offering clear safety or certainty.
More than 1,000 former U.S. allies and their families have spent over a year in limbo at the Al-Sailiya facility, a former U.S. base, awaiting decisions on resettlement as processing delays continue.
Refugees told Agence France-Presse they fear returning to Afghanistan due to security risks, while uncertainty over a reported relocation plan to the Democratic Republic of the Congo has deepened anxiety.
Residents described worsening psychological pressure and a lack of clear communication, saying they feel “stuck in limbo” after months of waiting with no confirmed pathway forward.
Many said they have received no official notice about relocation, while rumors about camp closure or forced transfers continue to circulate, increasing stress among families.
U.S. officials have not confirmed any transfer plan but said relocation to a third country could offer refugees safety and a chance to rebuild their lives.
Afghanistan is facing a severe humanitarian crisis, with millions dependent on aid, widespread unemployment, and limited access to basic services, making safe return difficult for many displaced people.
International agencies have warned that vulnerable populations, including former government workers and those linked to foreign forces, remain at heightened risk if they return.
At the same time, increasing numbers of Afghan refugees have been forcibly returned from Iran and Pakistan, adding pressure to already strained humanitarian conditions inside Afghanistan.
Rights groups say forced returns, combined with limited resettlement pathways, have created a growing protection crisis, leaving thousands of Afghans with few safe and durable options.
