EU Condemns Pakistan Strikes on Kunar, Warns Against Targeting Educational Institutions

The European Union condemned Pakistan’s strikes in Kunar, warning against targeting civilians and educational sites, after shelling reportedly killed and injured dozens.

The European Union delegation in Afghanistan has condemned Pakistan’s recent military strikes on Kunar province, including reported shelling that struck the Syed Jamaluddin Afghan University, stressing that educational institutions must never be targeted in conflict. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the bloc urged all parties to respect international law and ensure the protection of civilians, warning that attacks on non-military sites risk further escalation and humanitarian harm.

According to local reports, Pakistani artillery fire hit areas in and around Asadabad, the provincial capital of Kunar, as well as the Dangam and Shultan districts earlier this week. Initial casualty figures indicate that at least four people were killed and around 45 others wounded, although the full extent of the damage remains unclear amid limited access to affected areas.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) also reiterated that civilian infrastructure, particularly schools and universities, must not be used or targeted during hostilities. The mission said dozens of people were reported killed or injured in the strikes and called for restraint, emphasizing the need for accountability and adherence to international humanitarian standards.

Taliban authorities stated that the Syed Jamaluddin Afghan University in Asadabad was among the sites hit, with several students reportedly injured in the attack. The incident has raised alarm among residents and aid agencies, who fear a worsening security situation along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.

Cross-border tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan have intensified in recent months, driven by mutual accusations over militant activity and border security. Islamabad has repeatedly expressed concern about armed groups operating from Afghanistan territory, while Taliban officials have rejected the claims and urged dialogue instead of military operation.

Kunar province, located along the porous and mountainous frontier, has long been vulnerable to sporadic shelling and clashes. Civilians in the region often bear the brunt of such incidents, with limited access to medical care and infrastructure further exacerbating the humanitarian impact of cross-border violence.
