Proper recovery is as important to our overall health as the exercises we do and the foods we eat on a daily basis. I love getting in a challenging workout, whether it’s a heavy lower body lift, a long Zone 2 run, or a Hyrox sim. But I’ll also be the first to admit that I seriously slack off in the recovery department. As I’ve started making a more intentional effort to implement stretching and mobility work into my routine, I was ready to invest in some equipment.
Hyperice’s new Hypervolt 3 was one of the new additions. I’ve used massage guns from friends before, but I’ve never actually owned one myself, thus lacking the consistency required to reap the real rewards. Now, as the proud owner of my own, I was curious to find out whether massage guns actually live up to the hype as part of a regular recovery routine.
After about a month of using the Hypervolt 3—both before and after workouts—I’m genuinely impressed with the results so far. Read on for my full thoughts on the Hyperice Hypervolt 3.

As a newbie, I admittedly don’t have much of a baseline to compare it to, but I have noticed it’s helped reduce daily tension and post-workout soreness. I received the Hypervolt 3 just in time for my first Hyrox race, using it right before and directly after the event. It definitely helped manage the inevitable soreness that followed. Call it placebo if you want, but research backs up percussion therapy as a useful recovery tool. One 2023 study found that massage guns may help reduce delayed-onset muscle soreness when used immediately after exercise or within 24 to 72 hours post-workout.
"Muscle guns are one of the best at-home tools for muscle pain, recovery, and performance," says Robbie Mann, PT, DPT, OCS, CMTPT, Mideast regional director at FYZICAL Therapy and Balance Center. "From helping reduce spasms after exercising, improving post-exercise muscle soreness, or releasing muscle knots to improve performance, muscle guns optimize normal muscle function."
The Hypervolt 3 features five speeds of percussion combined with pressure sensor technology to help guide your intensity. That said, I will warn that the higher speeds might be a bit intense, especially for beginners. Even the lower speeds aren’t exactly gentle if you’re looking for something more soothing. But the five interchangeable head attachments help balance that out, giving you the ability to target everything from larger muscle groups to smaller knots.
Overall, I'm a fan and find myself using it on a near-daily basis, though I’ll need more time with it to determine the long-term impact. Still, it’s already made my recovery routine feel more accessible and easier to stick with.
