Not the biggest club: Pogba drops explosive dig that will anger Liverpool
Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has launched a brutal swipe at Liverpool.
Pogba recently appeared on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast.
The midfielder played seven times under Sir Alex Ferguson before joining Juventus on a free transfer in 2012.
After four years of huge success, the Frenchman returned to Old Trafford in 2016 in a blockbuster move and remained until 2022.
His second spell at United was a true rollercoaster, packed with unforgettable highs and frustrating lows.
“Who is Graeme Souness?”
One of his most iconic displays came against Leeds United in the opening game of the 2021-22 season at Old Trafford.
United dismantled Leeds 5-1 that day, with Pogba producing a staggering four assists.
Pundit Graeme Souness responded by claiming that such performances should be standard for a £100 million player.
Pogba has now broken his silence on those remarks. He said: “I didn’t know who he was. I heard he’s a legend. It wasn’t even that. I did not know who he was.”
It is worth noting that four assists in a single match are extraordinary for any player, especially against one of United’s fiercest rivals and not against lower-league opposition.
Souness often appeared overly critical when discussing Pogba and United, with his comments clearly driven by personal bias than by objective analysis.
Liverpool not as big as Man United
Ferdinand then asked the World Cup winner whether players signed for huge fees, such as Jack Grealish, Florian Wirtz or Alexander Isak, had escaped similar scrutiny.
The 33-year-old delivered a telling response: “But are you at United? You at United, what do you expect? It’s the biggest club. If not the biggest club, it’s in the top 3. Madrid with Manchester United, with media, they are quite the same, for me.”
For the record, United paid Juventus £89 million for Pogba, not the £100 million often quoted.
Liverpool spent £100 million plus add-ons on Wirtz and a reported £125 million on Isak last summer.
Their Premier League title defence has collapsed in disappointing fashion.
They were thrashed by Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
Crystal Palace also stunned the Merseyside club with a 3-0 victory in the Carabao Cup Round of 16.
After crashing out of the UEFA Champions League, it was confirmed that they would end the campaign trophyless despite spending more than £400 million last summer.
Wirtz has managed just four goals and three assists in 29 league games this season, while Pogba faced heavy criticism despite recording more assists in one 90-minute performance.
Isak has been unfortunate with injuries and arguably deserves patience.
However, the lack of criticism aimed at Wirtz while Pogba was labelled a flop highlights the double standards in football discourse.
