Manchester United are closing in on a major breakthrough in talks over a new contract for wonderkid Kobbie Mainoo.

According to journalist Samuel Luckhurst, Man United have verbally agreed a five-year deal with Mainoo.

He is set for a bumper pay rise, with his new salary expected to be around £150,000 a week.

His agents have made progress in the latest round of discussions over the last week and all parties believe it is a matter of time until there is an announcement.

This is a groundbreaking update as Mainoo is considered the present and the future of the club.

Mainoo submitted a loan transfer request last summer as former manager Ruben Amorim told him to compete with club captain Bruno Fernandes for the starting role.

This was an outrageous suggestion from Amorim, who constantly overlooked the United academy graduate.

Interim head coach Michael Carrick wasted no time in restoring faith, immediately reintegrating Mainoo into the starting XI.

The 21-year-old has since started 10 of the 11 matches under Carrick, missing only the clash with Leeds United due to injury.
