Ryan Giggs wants £38m star back at Old Trafford, he scored 14 goals this season
Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has dropped a big suggestion to INEOS that could change their transfer plans.
Speaking on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, Giggs urged United to consider bringing Rasmus Hojlund back to Old Trafford.
He said when asked about recalling any loan players: “Maybe Hojlund, maybe. I thought he was unlucky he was just the only centre forward at the club.
“Everyone expected him to come in and do great. I think Sesko gets more chances and scores more goals.
“But you never know, if you’ve got two young, hungry centre forwards up front and say fight it out.
“You see at United that’s always been a strength. I say training is harder than the games, if you’ve United centre halves at one end marking Sesko it’s going to be competitive.”
United loaned out several first-team players at the start of the season.
Marcus Rashford and Hojlund were sent on loan to Barcelona and Napoli, with both clubs holding options to make the moves permanent.
For Hojlund, Napoli would be obligated to sign him if they secure qualification for the UEFA Champions League.
Jadon Sancho joined Aston Villa, with United having no interest in extending his deal. Sancho is likely to leave as a free agent in July.
Andre Onana was also loaned out to Trabzonspor after two underwhelming seasons, but his chances of returning look slim with Senne Lammens now firmly established.
Hojlund can still become a top striker
Giggs made a logical argument by backing Hojlund rather than leaning on nostalgia with Rashford.
The 23-year-old has netted 14 goals for Napoli this season, with ten of them coming in Serie A.
The Denmark international bagged 26 goals in 95 games for the Red Devils during his two-year stay.
His debut season hinted at a bright future, but last campaign saw a dip in confidence and sharpness.
That struggle was evident in his physical duels and his occasionally erratic first touch.
Unlike Alejandro Garnacho, Hojlund still maintains a strong rapport with several players in the current United squad.
While Sesko has impressed in his debut season, the demands of European football next term will test United’s depth significantly.
Hojlund could offer healthy competition up front, provided both forwards are willing to share responsibilities and minutes.
Having said that, we do not think that Napoli would pass up the chance to secure him permanently for around £38 million (€44m).
The Italian side currently sit third in Serie A, eight points clear of Como 1907 in fifth, putting them in a strong position to qualify for the Champions League.
It would be a big surprise if they fail to qualify for the Champions League from this position.
