Russia’s Lavrov says Iran has right to uranium enrichment
Sergei Lavrov said Iran has the legitimate right to enrich uranium, reaffirming Russia’s support for Tehran’s position under international law.
Speaking on April 15, Lavrov said Moscow would welcome any arrangement on enriched uranium that satisfies Iran and respects its legal rights, signaling continued diplomatic backing for Tehran.
His remarks come as the United States has intensified pressure on Iran, insisting that Tehran must fully halt uranium enrichment as part of any future agreement.
Lavrov also accused Western countries of attempting to dictate foreign policy choices to nations in Central Asia and the South Caucasus, reflecting broader geopolitical tensions between Russia and the West.
Reports have indicated that U.S. negotiators previously discussed a potential long-term suspension of Iran’s enrichment activities during recent talks, though positions remain deeply divided.
Diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran, including recent talks in Islamabad, have yet to produce a breakthrough, with both sides maintaining firm positions on key nuclear issues.
Donald Trump has rejected proposals for a temporary suspension, instead calling for a complete halt to Iran’s uranium enrichment program as a condition for any deal.
Lavrov’s comments highlight ongoing divisions among global powers, underscoring the challenges facing negotiations as efforts continue to resolve the dispute over Iran’s nuclear activities.
