Lilongwe, April 14, Mana: Preparations for the expansion of the M001 Road from Area 1 Mosque to Chidzanja Turn-Off in Lilongwe have gained momentum, with the Japanese Government initiating steps towards upgrading the road into a dual carriageway.
The project, to be implemented through a grant from the Japanese Government, is an extension of works that included the construction of a new five-lane bridge across the Lilongwe River.
A team from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on Monday met government officials at Capital Hill to outline implementation plans for the project.
The JICA team is expected to conduct a preparatory survey focusing on technical, environmental, and social aspects. The exercise will produce preliminary designs, cost estimates, an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment report, and other key documents required for implementation.
The project includes road rehabilitation, expansion, and improvement of access roads and junctions, aimed at enhancing the movement of goods and people along the route.
“JICA Director for Infrastructure Management, Yasuhiro Suhara, said the project will support Malawis development agenda by improving connectivity and reducing transportation costs.
Improved road infrastructure will enhance access to markets, services, and opportunities for communities along the road,” Suhara said.
General Manager of Katahira and Engineers International, Keiichi Ohashi, said the survey will assess potential impacts and mitigation measures to ensure the project is sustainable and inclusive.
“The survey will carefully consider environmental factors to ensure that any negative impacts are minimised. Lessons learned from previous project phases will guide the development of effective mitigation measures,” Ohashi said.
Director of Roads in the Ministry of Transport and Public Works, Engineer Kelvin Ngwali Mphonda, said the ministry is ready to provide the necessary support to ensure smooth implementation of the project.
Minister of Transport and Public Works, Jappie Mhango, requested the expansion of the road in February during the handover of the Lilongwe Bridge project.
