Gridlock alert: DOT reveals days NYC streets will see major traffic jams
NEW YORK (PIX11) – New York City drivers, listen up: the Department of Transportation has revealed its list of gridlock alert days.
On gridlock alert days, commuters should expect extensive street closures and heavy traffic in Manhattan. The DOT is encouraging people to use mass transit, like subways and buses, over driving during the 20 designated days.
The first gridlock alert of 2025 is for the United Nations General Assembly, expected to be held from Sept. 23 through Sept. 29. Midtown traffic speeds drop to under four miles per hour during the event, according to the DOT.
The gridlock alert days are as follows:
- Monday, Sept. 22
- Tuesday, Sept. 23
- Wednesday, Sept. 24
- Thursday, Sept. 25
- Friday, Sept. 26
- Wednesday, Nov. 19
- Thursday, Nov. 20
- Tuesday, Nov. 25
- Wednesday, Dec. 3
- Thursday, Dec. 4
- Friday, Dec. 5
- Monday, Dec. 8
- Tuesday, Dec. 9
- Wednesday, Dec. 10
- Thursday, Dec. 11
- Friday, Dec. 12
- Monday, Dec. 15
- Tuesday, Dec. 16
- Wednesday, Dec. 17
- Thursday, Dec. 18
There is also expanded Citi Bike access in several New York City neighborhoods, according to the DOT.
