A New York State Department of Transportation worker was injured after being hit by a car in Pittstown. Also, Verizon has upgraded service in Saratoga Springs ahead of the Belmont Stakes. These stories, and more, are in your five things to know this Friday, May 30.
1. NYSDOT worker struck by vehicle in Pittstown
A serious accident shut down part of Route 7 in Rensselaer County for several hours during the evening commute on Thursday. The victim is a New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) construction worker. New York State Police say he was hit by a car near Campbell Lane in Pittstown.
2. Dummy light back up and running in Canajoharie
Canajoharie’s famous dummy light is back and now more secure. After being hit by a tractor trailer, the traffic light was kept off the road.
3. St. Clare’s Hospital pensioners awaiting trial date after hearing
Former employees of St. Clare’s Hospital have fought for their pensions after the hospital closed nearly two decades ago. After a hearing Thursday, they’ll have to wait a little longer to find out when the case will go to trial.
4. Canajoharie 6th grade D.A.R.E. students graduate
Canajoharie Central School District’s 6th grade D.A.R.E. class graduated on Thursday afternoon. Before getting their certificates, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office visited soon-to-be 7th graders in the new D.A.R.E. Camaro.
5. Verizon upgrades service in Saratoga Springs ahead of Belmont Stakes
Verizon is partnering with the Saratoga Springs Police Department and NYRA to boost cell service ahead of the Belmont Stakes. Verizon said it will not only help racing fans when placing bets, but it will also enhance public safety.
