Suspect killed, officer in serious condition after police involved shootout in Humboldt Park
A 19-year-old man has died and a Chicago police officer was seriously wounded after a shootout in a Humboldt Park alley Thursday night, police said.
Officers were on patrol in the 4300 block of West North Avenue when they tried to stop an armed male suspect around 10:40 p.m., according to Chicago police. Police did not say why they were trying to stop him.
The 19-year-old fled into a backyard and a struggle ensued when officers tried to detain him. During the struggle, the suspect's gun went off, striking an officer and an officer returned fire, striking the suspect.
The unidentified 19-year-old was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The officer was taken to a nearby hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg, where he was stabilized but still in serious condition.
According to police scanner traffic, the shooting appeared to happen in an alley off North Avenue between Kolin and Kostner avenues.
"Shots fired, shots fired!" an officer screamed at a dispatcher.
"Kostner and North shots fired at police," the dispatcher responded.
"We got one officer shot in the leg," another officer said, adding the officer then shot the suspect. "He's down," the officer said.
The dispatcher called a 10-1, an emergency request for all officers in the area to help out and get to the scene.
"We'll get EMS rolling we got two people shot,'' the dispatcher said.
A gun that the 19-year-old had was recovered, the dispatcher said.
Chicago police Investigative Response Team and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability are investigating.
