Beloved Lafayette staple Breaux's Mart changes ownership after 65 years
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- A family-owned staple of the Lafayette community, Breaux's Mart relinquishes ownership after 65 years in business. Manager Chase Breaux shares with that it's a difficult decision but one that ultimately had to be made.
Breaux's customer Wallace Senegal patiently waits to buy a hot plate lunch from Breaux's Mart. Senegal does not stand alone; he is among many others. For Senegal, the cooks at Breaux's Mart are irreplaceable.
"The cook and the employees because they have decent food, good food. That's why I come here," Senegal stated.
In other words, some hope the new owners will not try to fix what's not broken.
"Keep doing it. Keep feeding the people because you see the lines. I waited in line for a half hour," customer Barbara Treadway said.
Manager Chase Breaux describes the store as a home away from home. Chase recalls how his grandfather and great-grandfather opened the store in 1959.
Chase says he's been at the store his entire life; it's all he has ever known.
"We've been here for so long. It's just been such a good experience, you know. It's the community, the customers and our employees that made it all worthwhile," Chase added.
Chase explains that the decision was not an easy one.
"Life is full of hard decisions, and sometimes you just have to make the one that's best for your family at the time," said Chase. "It's not something that we came to quickly or easily."
Chase passionately shares that the patrons and community who have supported the grocery store for over six decades are truly like family.
"We are just grateful for all the support and the love they've shown us, and I know they are going to show the same love and support to the Lyons family," Chase explained.
Chase anticipates the transition to the new owners, the Lyons, will take place by the end of June.
