New Rotterdam pallet store provides surprise shopping experience
ROTTERDAM, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- At first, some shoppers who walk by Pallet Treasures inside Rotterdam Square Mall may be confused by the concept. "I saw this store, and I was like, 'What's this store all about with boxes and pallets in here? That's unusual. Are they moving in, moving out?'" asked Michael Sergalis when he first spotted the store.
With no displays, just pallets placed side-by-side and ready to be rifled through, the big boxes are filled with heavily discounted items from Amazon and Walmart that were either returned or overstocked and still in great condition.
"I feel like I am going through a treasure chest, finding things I can use," said Sergalis, now a frequent customer of the store.
The couple behind the idea -- thinking outside of the box -- are Amber Foley and her husband Josh. They opened up Pallet Treasures about two months ago. "To my knowledge, there is not anything like this in the Capital Region," said Josh Foley.
Josh and his wife started buying up pallets last year to turn a profit. This year, they were ready to help others make some money on the side. "In this economy, everyone is looking to make some extra money, and it gives them an opportunity to do it right from their garage, right from their fingertips on their phones."
The pallets are priced anywhere between $150 to more than $200. Edward Moran, another customer, said, "It's all good stuff. I've sold quite a bit."
"People like the mystery behind it," Amber Foley explained. "They love to go through the boxes and see what is in there. There is a bunch of stuff at the bottom they don't get to look through."
With a surprise inside every box, the Foleys are helping turn a mystery shopping experience into a viable side hustle for some.
