Williams, Tong Rise in Law’s Top Prospect Update
Jett Williams and Jonah Tong both cracked Keith Law’s latest top 50 prospects rankings for The Athletic. Williams rose from number 62 to 33, while Tong went from unranked to No. 50. Additionally, Brandon Sproat dropped from the rankings, with Law citing the righty’s struggles with walks and hard contact.
On Williams, Law writes, “His plate discipline is truly elite; he has swung at pitches well out of the zone just 8 percent of the time this year, so those high OBPs are very likely to carry him to everyday status and beyond.”
After an injury-plagued 2024 season, Williams is batting .284/.376/.482 with four homers, 11 doubles, two triples, and 11 steals in 157 plate appearances for Double-A Binghamton.
Tong has followed up his breakout 2024 season with a strong start to 2025, posting a 2.37 ERA with 65 strikeouts against 20 walks in 38 innings for Binghamton.
“Tong works heavily off his fastball, throwing it almost 60 percent of the time, and gets a ton of misses on the pitch, especially when he works in the upper third,” Law writes. “He comes from a high slot that hitters can’t pick up and works off the fastball with a 12/6 curveball and solid changeup.”
Williams also checks in at No. 60 on Baseball America’s rankings, with Nolan McLean at No. 70, Sproat at No. 97, and Tong at No. 100. On MLB Pipeline, Williams ranks at No. 51, Sproat at No. 68, and Carson Benge at No. 89. ESPN is the highest on Williams, placing him at No. 20, with Tong at No. 50.
