Boil water advisory issued for city of Watervliet
WATERVLIET, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The city of Watervliet has issued a boil water advisory for all residents on Sunday. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth and preparing foods until the advisory is lifted.
According to Watervliet Mayor Charles Patricelli, inadequate disinfection of drinking water was found during routine monitoring at the city's filtration plant on Sunday. Disinfection kills harmful microbes that may be in drinking water. These microbes can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches and other symptoms.
"I was just notified that there was a failure of one of the chlorination devices at the filtration plant and the levels went above the allowable threshold," Mayor Patricelli said.
The disinfection process error has reportedly been corrected and disinfection has been restored. However, the mayor said, city officials now need to conduct water testing to ensure that levels are within acceptable thresholds. The city said it will also be working with the plant's monitoring company to figure out why the system did not notify officials of the device malfunction.
"We have corrected the device but need to conduct testing per the Health Department regulations and, once approved, everyone will be notified of the living of the advisory," the mayor said. "This is, of course, precautionary and we'll keep you informed."
According to the city of Watervliet, the boil water advisory may be in effect for the next three days. Residents will be informed when they no longer need to boil their water.
In order to kill harmful microbes in your water, bring tap water to a rolling boil for one minute and cool before using. You may also use bottled water.
Those with questions may contact the City of Watervliet Filter Plant by calling (518) 785-7082 or the Albany County Health Department at (518) 447-4620. Stay with NEWS10 for updates on this advisory.
