Booker on potential 2028 run for president: ‘I’m focused on today’
Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) sidestepped a question on Sunday about a possible 2028 presidential run, saying instead he’s focused on “today” and his 2026 reelection campaign for his Senate seat.
“Senator, yes or no, are you considering a run in 2028?” NBC News’s Kristen Welker asked Booker on “Meet the Press” on Sunday.
“I’m focused on today and my re-election in ’26,” Booker responded. “I’ve already announced to the people of New Jersey. I’m hoping they’ll allow me to be their senator for another six years.”
“And let’s be clear, I’m proud of the work that we’ve done over the last six years,” he continued. “There’s been no senator that has had a better record of bringing resources back to the state of New Jersey.”
“So, I’m focused on the now, working to defend folks, and God willing, being re-elected in 2026,” he added.
Booker’s name has been circulated in recent weeks as a possible contender for the White House in 2028, as the Democratic Party continues to lack an obvious front-runner for the next presidential race.
Booker, who ran an unsuccessful 2020 campaign for president, made headlines recently when he broke the record for the longest floor speech in the Senate, speaking for more than 25 hours in protest of the Trump administration and its policies.
