Moncus Park hosts Father's Day fishing event for loved ones
(KLFY)-- At Moncus Park in Lafayette, families said they came together not only for fishing, but also to create memories for years to come.
Dads, grandpas, uncles and friends bonded by the water and took in nature for Moncus Park's Father's Day fishing event. For some, it was their first time fishing together, but for others, it was tradition. Victoria Dodge with Moncus Park said this event was a special moment for families to savor precious moments together.
"You see a kid maybe fish their first fish or get their biggest fish and just the joy on the people's face that they're with is such a fun thing to be around, just enjoying it together is such a fun thing to see," Dodge said.
Tony Murray said he recalls how fishing with his father strengthened their bond. He said he looks forward to creating an even stronger bond with his son.
"My son is big into fishing and has just been fishing in some of the small ponds around the neighborhood, saw this event, so we thought we'd come out here and enjoy this," Murray said. "It's just been really nice out here."
Pete Tatum said he works in an oil field and only gets to see his family every two weeks. Despite his sacrifices for them, he said it's important to be there for your loved ones as much as possible.
"I only get 14 days with my family, so we try to do as much as we can when I'm home," Tatum said. "It's time away to sacrifice, if you don't have family, what you got. I'd rather have the kids outside than them playing games all day."
Frank Dardar said he and his granddaughter, Paige Barthelmy, have shared a close bond ever since she was born and even gave her tips on how to fish.
"We bonded ever since she was small," Dardar said. "That's my favorite granddaughter."
Barthelemy said while she is getting older, she said she will always be open to spending quality family time with her grandfather and encourages others to do the same.
"You should always be open to have these times," Barthelemy said. "I know especially as you get older it might feel like I want to go hang out with my friends. These times are important and always be open to do things with your grandparents."
