‘Something you don’t want to do’ – Player opens up on his tough decision to leave Spurs
Harry Winks has admitted that while dropping down to the Championship was a difficult choice to make last summer, he insisted that he is over the moon with the decision, having thoroughly enjoyed his football since his move to Leicester City.
Winks will be back in the Premier League next season after the Foxes won the Championship title this season, thanks in no small part to the former Spurs man’s excellent displays in the middle of the park.
As many would have expected, the England international has looked a cut above the rest in English football’s second tier and his decision to drop down a division has now been vindicated.
However, the Tottenham academy graduate admitted that the decision is not one he took lightly, revealing that he was swayed when a club of Leicester’s stature came calling.
It was difficult for Harry Winks to leave Spurs
When asked about the decision to join a Championship side, Winks told BBC’s Football Focus: “It’s something you don’t want to do, if I am being totally honest with you.
“You want to stay in the Premier League. That’s the holy grail. When I see a club like Leicester come in for me. I see the infrastructure and the history of this club, it’s such a big club and a huge and strong Premier League club. There was no doubt about the club, for me.”
Around five years ago, Winks looked like he had the world at his feet and was destined to be a linchpin of Tottenham’s and England’s midfield for years to come.
However, he fell out of favour after Mauricio Pochettino’s departure from Spurs in 2019 and he confessed that he needed to leave his boyhood club last summer in search of a new challenge.
The Leicester star added: “I had such a strong and positive start to my career at Tottenham where things were great. Then I had a little bit of a spell where I didn’t really get the football I wanted to play. I didn’t really get enough game time to show anything. It’s tough.
“But you have to, somehow, stay resilient, keep confident and make a big decision. That was the last year for me to leave and try something new. Sitting back and looking at it now, it’s probably been my most enjoyable and best season yet.”

Winks certainly took a brave call by dropping down to the Championship because his career might have quickly nosedived into obscurity if he had struggled at the start at Leicester. However, his choice of club proved to be perfect and there is no doubt that a player of his quality belongs in the Premier League.
