Sports briefs: Unbeaten Tam tops Redwood by a single stroke
Hayden Thill carded a 30 at Mill Valley Golf Course on Thursday, leading the Tam High golf team to a narrow win against Redwood in a tri-match that also featured Branson.
The Red-tailed Hawks (11-0) remained unbeaten in league, edging the Giants by a single stroke, 175-176. Mx Berg followed with a 33 while Abe Willard and Jack McIntire carded matching 36s.
Redwood was led by Cole O’Connell and Wesley Wihlborg who both shot 34s. Brody Root, Jack Mount, and Sam Sumski all shot 36s for the Giants.
Both teams posted wins against Branson, which was led by Aria Saluja’s 36 and Carl Smith’s 37, en route to a team score of 198.
- Marin Academy continued its undefeated season in the Bay Counties League West while handing University its first league loss, 160-170 at par-36 Presidio Golf Club on Thursday. The tri-match also included Bay School, which shot a 225. Charlie Hansen shot an even-par 36 for MA (8-0) while Charlie Wilhelm and Dylan Siegel both carded 40s.
- San Rafael High’s Logan Dean shot a 40 as the day’s low medalist, and Kai Payne shot a 42 at Meadow Club on Thursday to lead the Bulldogs (234) past Archie Williams (242) and Novato (277) in a three-way matchup. Archie Williams’ Julian Nichol shot a 42, with Asa Alder at 43. The Hornets’ Sam Ojeda came around at 49, with Hegan Busby at 53.
Boys tennis
Branson got wins in each of the top three singles matches to hold off San Marin 4-3 on Thursday. Finn Higgins, Mason Ogborne, and Griffin Cooper had the singles wins for the Bulls. Tomas Prada picked up the lone singles win for the Mustangs.
- Qas Vidyarthi and Charlie Miller picked up wins in the top two singles matches to lead Marin Catholic to a 6-1 victory against San Rafael on Thursday. The most competitive match of the day saw MC’s Toby Tobin outlast Kai Carlin, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 1-0 (4) at No. 4 singles.
- Novato’s Indy Stanis and Yamato Toshi put together particularly strong performances at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, as the Hornets defeated Tam 6-1 on Thursday. Stanis held on for a 6-4, 7-6 (7) win over Sam Zail, while Toshi won 7-5, 3-6, 10-4 over Tam’s Mason Dali. Tam’s Elliot Maybury and Gabe Heller pulled out a 7-5, 3-6, 10-8 win at No. 3 doubles.
Prep softball
Junior Carly Amborn hit a solo home run in the first inning to give San Domenico a fast start, but Head Royce finished strong with a 17-2 win over the Panthers in Oakland on Thursday. Burnsie Burns had an RBI single in the fifth inning for the Panthers.
Boys lacrosse
San Marin remains undefeated in league play with Thursday’s 10-6 victory over crosstown rival Novato. Luke Saysette had four goals and two assists, and Micheal Giomi had three goals and four assists for the Mustangs (8-2, 4-0 MCAL).
• Marin Catholic is still locked in the MCAL title race after Thursday’s 14-2 victory over Tam left the Wildcats (9-3, 4-0 MCAL) undefeated in league play.
Girls lacrosse
Second-place Marin Catholic earned a big 23-11 win over third-place Tam on Thursday. The Wildcats (8-3, 5-1 MCAL) gave themselves some breathing room from the Red-tailed Hawks (5-7, 3-2 MCAL) with only a pair of league games left in the regular season schedule.
