“Enjoy your sweet treats but don’t overdo it.”
But politicians and commentators hit back.
Nigel Farage said: “I’m sorry Dr Kelso, but you really bore the pants off me.
“It’s Easter. I don’t eat chocolate every day, but I’m going to scoff all of this.”
Tory MP Steve Brine called it “naive nonsense”.
He said: “That is not a preventative health strategy.
“That is just, ‘Let’s think of a press release before the Easter weekend’. It doesn’t help.”
And Christopher Snowdon, of the Institute of Economic Affairs, said: “NHS bosses should take a break from hectoring the public and let us enjoy Easter.”
The statement from Dr Kelso was issued in a health service blog.
He said most people are not aware that the average Easter egg contains around three-quarters of an adult’s recommended daily calorie intake.
The NHS recommends men don’t eat more than 2,500 calories and women 2,000 a day.
