A minute with Theo Lucas Singer-songwriter
Where do you live?
I’m in South London which is such a vibrant and creative place. That’s where I do most of my gigs as well. I share a flat with my best friend, my brother. We make music together and we actually built a small studio during lockdown, where we recorded my debut single ‘Rolling Stone’!
What did you have for breakfast?
Nothing too crazy, just an iced latte and a toastie.
Describe your perfect day
Not really a morning person, so I like to start my day gently. I do some yoga and then run, which puts me in a great mindset. During the day I cook my own meals, mostly Cypriot dishes, so I Facetime my yiayia who is my favourite cook. We made pourgouri together the other day!
Then I’m working on my songs in the evening, as I get more inspiration when the night falls. I go in my studio, turn on the neon lights, get my tea or wine ready (depending on the occasion) and then I jam around my piano and record ideas.
I’m currently working on my debut EP.
Best book ever read?
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. I was fascinated by Voldemort’s back story and the similarities the book had with the movie. It made me feel like I’d seen the movie already.
Best childhood memory?
My dad took me to small venues around Paphos to perform. I must’ve been around 13, and we would go to pubs, festivals etc. and I remember me singing covers of Wham, Elton John and Sakis Rouvas with my crappy little keyboard to relatives and strangers. Good old times!
What is always in your fridge?
Fage yoghurt to the front and a cheeky tiramisu to the back.
What music are you listening to in the car at the moment?
It’s too busy to drive in London, so I prefer taking the tube, but I always have my headphones and Spotify on. My playlist varies from pop to techno to rap but let me check what’s the last thing I listened to… ‘Escapism’ by Raye, such a great tune and really relatable lyrics.
What’s your spirit animal?
A mustang. They’re fearless, run miles and miles without stopping, and they jump the hurdles of life with ease.
What are you most proud of?
Performing at the opening of the iconic Battersea Power Station in London, sharing the stage with some incredible acts. It was so special for me as I sang some of my unreleased songs for the first time, and my fans loved it.
Performing live is what I enjoy the most, especially if it’s for a great cause. My next gig is for Pride at the Cyprus High Commission, an event really close to my heart.
What movie scene has really stayed with you?
It’s one from Call Me By Your Name. The film and its music are brilliant, and one of the scenes that really touched me was the monologue of Elio’s dad at the end. It literally made me cry like a 5-year-old.
If you could pick anyone at all (alive or dead) to go out for the evening with, who would it be?
George Michael. He was one of the best artists of all time.
If you could time travel when/where would you go?
That’s a great question. I think I’d like to travel back to the 80s when Eurythmics were writing ‘Sweet Dreams’. I wish I was there in the studio session the moment Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart were bouncing lyric ideas and melodies, jamming chords on the synths and how they came up with the final version of the song.
What is your greatest fear?
Spiders. Like I could die if they come within one metre.
What would you say to your 18-year-old self?
The future holds great things for you. Keep going
Name the one thing that would stop you dating someone
I don’t know about the one thing that’d ruin the date but if you ask me out to get burgers and fries, you’ll win my heart.
If the world is ending in 24 hours what would you do?
Take the first plane back to Cyprus and be with my loved ones.
