Oakland: Coroner identifies body found in sewage hole
OAKLAND — A man found dead Saturday morning lodged inside a sewage hole in Jack London Square has been named by the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office coroner’s office.
He was identified Monday as Ian Fabio, 41. As of Monday evening, an autopsy that will determine his exact cause of death had not been done.
Fabio, who had an Oakland address, was found unresponsive inside the hole about 7:40 a.m. Saturday in the 300 block of Broadway.
The narrow hole is on the sidewalk between a restaurant and a construction site.
Someone passing by saw him inside the hole and summoned police.
He was feet first inside the hole and his arms were about a foot from the top, authorities said. How long he had been in the hole and why is under investigation.
He was removed from the hole by firefighters and pronounced dead at the scene.
The hole has since been covered over by city workers.
Anyone with information about the death is asked to call police at 510-238-3821.
