Burton Holds Off Late Race Run From Pumpelly – PF Racing Wins Daytona
Rising NASCAR Cup Series star Harrison Burton and reigning NASCAR Truck Series champion Zane Smith won the season-opening BMW M Endurance Classic at Daytona International Speedway, with Burton holding off the #83 BGB Motorsports Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport of Spencer Pumpelly over the final laps of Friday’s IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge opener – and winning by less than seven tenths of a second.
Burton inherited the lead in Grand Sport (GS) after a crushing blow dealt to the #47 NOLASPORT Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport of Elliott Skeer and Adam Adelson. Skeer was leading with 22 minutes to go when his Porsche broke down at turn six.
Porsche were able to salvage some dignity from a difficult day however, after Pumpelly’s late race run brought he and co-drivers Tom Collingwood and Jeroen Bleekemolen to the podium. The #41 PF Racing Ford driven by past Truck Series champion Ben Rhodes and popular second-generation driver Hallie Deegan finished third in GS.
In a grandstand finish for TCR honours, the first-generation #61 Road Shagger Racing Audi RS3 LMS took the class win after a marathon stint from Gavin Enstone, and Jon Morley holding off the #73 LA Honda World Racing Civic TCR of Mike LaMarra and William Tally over the line by less than half a second.
The #98 Bryan Herta Autosport with Curb-Agajanian Hyundai Elantra N TCR of Mark Wilkins and Mason Filippi rounded out the TCR podium in third.
