Does this Christmas tree fill you with holiday season joy?
It certainly didn’t give locals in a Merseyside town that festive feeling when it was unveiled by the council this week.
After being put up in St Helens town centre, the tree was branded ‘a laughing stock’.
Taking to social media to fume, one person said: ‘Yes that’s our Christmas tree. I saw it yesterday and my first thought was “have they recycled last year’s?”’
Another resident added: ‘This is not funny, people will be coming to our town…. we will be the laughing stock.’
Meanwhile, someone else added: ‘Buy cheap, buy twice. We pay enough council tax to get a decent tree.’
St Helens Council has agreed with locals, with a statement saying officials are ‘not happy either’ and have vowed to replace it.
But it’s not the first time the council has come under fire for not marking the Christmas season properly.
In 2021, locals reportedly complained about the town’s ‘embarrassing’ town centre Christmas decorations.
Some people said they were ‘ashamed’ by the level of decorations around the town, and the state of the large Christmas tree in Church Square.
In response to comments this year, a spokesperson for St Helens Borough Council said: ‘Hello everyone, just to let you know we’re not happy with this tree either.
‘When the tree is unwrapped it is our first chance to look at it too
and this does not meet our standards.
‘We can assure everyone that this tree will be replaced with a new one in the next 24 hours!’
