How old will King Charles III be when he is coronated?
Many will be looking forward to the coronation of King Charles III.
In addition to the usual royal pomp and circumstance, Brits are also being given a bank holiday on the Monday after it takes place – meaning many will get to enjoy an extra day off.
The King will be crowned alongside The Queen Consort, Camilla… after years and years of service to The Crown as formerly The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall.
Indeed, The King was made Prince of Wales back in 1958, when he was just aged nine, being crowned in 1969 aged 20. And Camilla became The Duchess aged 57 when she married into the Royal Family back in 2005.
So, just how old are Their Majesties now, and how old will they be on coronation day?
Let’s take a look.
How old will King Charles III be when he is coronated?
King Charles will be 74 when his coronation takes place on Saturday, May 6 2023.
His Majesty turned 74 on November 14, 2022, so won’t turn 75 until the November after his coronation.
Queen Consort Camilla will be crowned during the ceremony, too. Her Majesty will be 75 in May 2023.
Her birthday falls on July 17, so she will celebrate her 76th birthday just over two months later.
Just a few weeks earlier, The King and The Queen Consort will celebrate their 18th wedding anniversary, as they wed on April 9, 2005.
As it happens, the coronation date falls on the birthday of The King’s grandson via Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex – Archie Mountbatten-Windsor – who will turn four in 2023.
How old were Queen Elizabeth II and previous monarchs during their coronations?
The King’s age is quite the contrast to that of his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, at her coronation.
Elizabeth II was a younger 27 when her coronation took place on June 2, 1953.
She was just 25 years old when she became Queen of the United Kingdom, and was crowned alone (though her consort, Prince Philip, was part of the ceremony).
Her father King George VI was 41 at the time of his coronation. It took place on May 12, 1937 – just months after the abdication of his older brother Edward VIII (who then became The Duke of Windsor).
Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother was also crowned that day. She was aged 36.
On June 22, 1911, George VI’s father King George V was crowned aged 46, along with his mother Queen Mary aged 44.
Before him, there was King Edward VII – who, like The King, spent many decades as Prince of Wales before becoming monarch (nearly 60 years, to Charles’ 64 years).
Edward VII was the son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. He was crowned on August 9, 1902, aged 60. His spouse was Queen Alexandra, who was 57 at the time.
Last but not least is Queen Victoria, who was crowned aged 19 on June 23, 1838 – a year after becoming Queen and almost two years before she would marry Prince Albert on February 10, 1840.
