[Men's Cross Country] Cross Country Runners Continue to Improve
With only one experienced cross country runner as part of his 2022 cross country squad, long-time Williamson head coach Steve Hixson knew he had a lot of work to do with the group running for him this year. Despite the lack of racing experience by his runners, Hixson is very happy with each guy and the progress he has seen so far.
"The guys have been working hard and I'm pleased with the progress they have made. They continue to put in the work and improve. It is great me to see it and great for them to see in themselves," shared Hixson.
This past weekend the team took part in the 2022 Dan Talbot Invitational, hosted by Bryn Mawr College. The race took place at Rose Tree Park and despite the cold, damp weather and slippery conditions, Williamson's five runners continued their upward trend.
Leading the way to the team once again for freshman Ashton Ray (FR/Glenolden), who finished the race in 36th place overall. Shamar Smith (JR/Philadelphia, PA), the only veteran on the squad at this point, and also last year's top runner, finished 42nd overall, while Jack Gommer (FR/Media, PA), who continues to take time off his finishing time each race, finished in 44th place. Marquis Merricks and Pius Rogers rounded out the scoring for the team. Williamson finished 9th overall in the team standings.
"We still have a few key races coming up and I think our guys will continue to get better and better. I'm excited about what the future holds for the guys," closed Hixson.
