Fairport man arrested after attacking Rep. Lee Zeldin
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — 43-year-old David Jakubonis was arrested Saturday after attempting to attack New York Congressman Lee Zeldin, a Republican running for Governor of New York.
On Friday, Congressman Zeldin was speaking at a campaign event in Perinton. During his speech, Jakubonis walked onto the trailer towards Zeldin and lunged a keychain at him. As bystanders intervened, Jakubonis pulled Zeldin down and kept saying "you're done."
After the incident, Jakubonis was arrested and charged with assault using a dangerous weapon — which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years. He was later released on bail that day.
On Saturday, Jakubonis was arrested and then appeared before Judge Marion W. Payson. He is currently being held pending a detention hearing scheduled for July 27.
“I'm thankful that federal authorities came in to do what New York State’s broken pro-criminal justice system could not - uphold the rule of law," said Congressman Zeldin."The state must start prioritizing the safety of law-abiding New Yorkers over criminals. Cashless bail must be repealed and judges should have the discretion to set cash bail on far more offenses.”
