I’m an interior designer – the placement of your furniture matters more than you think, here’s how to get it right
IT’S NO SECRET that the place that we live can have a huge impact on our day to day lives.
You’ve probably heard thousands of times that you should tidy your bedroom before you go to sleep so you can properly relax.
Where your sofa sits is one of the many things that impacts a room[/caption]But it goes even further than that, it turns out.
In fact, the placement of your furniture can be the reason you feel uplifted or drained.
Good Housekeeping recently enlisted the help of designers and feng shui experts Anije Cho, Reiko Gomez of Reiko Design and Amanda Amato of AMA Designs & Interiors to pinpoint exactly how we should all arrange our homes for that perfect feeling.
It might seem obvious, but everyone has a slightly different role that they need their living room to play.

Some might use it for parties and entertaining, while others might want to it be peaceful and a retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Anije says: “Often located closer to the front door, it’s more public-facing room in your home as opposed to the bedroom or office, so the colours and layout should reflect that.”
When it comes to arranging the furniture in your living room, the sofa is usually the star of the show.
Reiko explained: “No matter the main function of the space an ideal furniture arrangement is one where, as you enter the space you can see the sofa greeting you.

“This will draw you into the room’s embrace,” they added.
Of course, some home layouts just don’t allow for this kind of design, if that’s the case the design pros recommend adding a console table behind the sofa to help section it off.
Having a well flowing room is something that often gets overlooked too.
“If you’re doing too much twisting and turning to get around pieces of furniture, or you find yourself squeezing between chairs, your arrangement is too tight,” Reiko revealed.
“Open things up, and possibly remove one or two pieces of furniture.”

The interior gurus also said that hanging mirrors and wall art can completely change the nature of a room.
Hanging them higher than you think you should is a good general tip to ensure the eye is drawn up and moods are lifted, they explained.
