Boy, 11, punished for wearing spotty socks to school
A year seven pupil has been punished for wearing spotty socks with his school uniform, despite his mum insisting they would look fine in a smart office.
Sacha Egerton-Fearn, 11, has been wearing similar socks since he started at the Sheffield school in September, but teachers recently launched a crackdown on non-regulation footwear.
He was singled out in a form group sock inspection because his had red polka dots so were not purely regulation black.
His mum Lorna said the ‘lovely dress socks’ were ‘perfectly suitable – they’re the sort of things people wear with suits’.
Sacha was given a penalty and told to wear different socks the next day, but wasn’t able to as he was staying at his dad’s and only had spotty ones.
So he was given another three minus points for coming in with them again.
Now his mum says the school should ‘cut the pupils some slack after all they’ve been through with the pandemic and lockdowns’.
She told the Sheffield Star said that luckily she did manage to find some plain black socks, but that some parents might have been financially stretched by having to buy new socks.
Sacha’s teacher initially gave him a pair of black socks to put on over his own, but the plan had to be abandoned because the children’s socks were much to small to fit his feet, which are size 10.
Astrea Academy Sheffield, located near Pitsmoor, said in a statement: ‘Astrea Academy Sheffield is committed to the highest standards of teaching and learning.
‘Our uniform policy has been regularly communicated to parents and carers and is also available to view online.
‘Our staff also communicate the policy to scholars daily, this includes the procedures if uniform standards are not met.
‘This week we have run a series of behaviour and expectations reset sessions, where through extended assemblies and specific time with form tutors, we have reminded scholars about their personal responsibilities around uniform.
‘If parents have any concerns, we encourage them to raise these with us directly, we are committed to supporting families of our scholars where needed.’
