Conte speaks on the benefit of signing experienced players like Ibrahimovic
Antonio Conte has stressed the importance of signing experienced players, insisting they can help drive their teammates on.
Conte’s project at Spurs is arguably the most difficult one of his managerial career so far, with the Lilywhites having declined considerably over the last two years.
The difficultly of the Italian’s task was highlighted over the two legs of their Carabao Cup semi-final against Chelsea, with the Lilywhites proving no match for Thomas Tuchel’s men.
On the back of the semi-final, some pundits have suggested that Tottenham need to go toe-to-toe with the likes of Chelsea in the transfer market if they want to compete for major honours.
However, the North London club are in the beginning of a new project, with Fabio Paratici taking over as the club’s managing director of football just last summer.
As part of the squad rebuild, Paratici went for young, up and coming players in the summer in the form of Bryan Gil, Emerson Royal and Cristian Romero.
Conte has now hinted that the club might have to sign some experienced stars to change the squad’s mentality.
When asked about Tottenham’s past strategy of signing young talents, the Italian told Football.London: “When you go to sign experienced players, it’s usually because you can spend money. This is one reason and then there is another reason.
“When you go to sign experienced players it can help you, it can help the players in the squad. Especially if there are young players without great experience.
“It is not simple to sign experienced players but at the same time I think there are players who can build something important.
“For example Ibrahimovic for Milan, a great signing for them. He brought his experience in a group of young players.
“To help them improve and to teach them how to manage the pressure. For these two reasons you can sign experienced players.”

Under Conte, I expect Spurs to pursue for a mix of youth and experienced players over the next couple of transfer windows. The Italian will likely want experienced heads in the backline like Stefan De Vrij.
However, I still expect the majority of the club’s signings to be younger than 25 as they go about rebuilding the squad for the future.
