[Women's Basketball] Three Strong Quarters Not Enough For Young Hawks at (RV) Menlo
ATHERTON, Calif. – The San Diego Christian College Hawks women's basketball team played three strong quarters but ended up with a 64-81 loss at the hands of the Menlo College Oaks on Saturday afternoon. The defeat moves the Hawks' record to 3-7 overall (1-3 GSAC).
Freshman guard. Laura Smith got the Hawks on the board first with a layup after the opening tip. Sophomore Isabel Feller would hit a jumper and a layup and senior guard Keren Hogue would complete a three-point play to take the lead to 9-6 early on. The two teams would continue to battle back and forth for the rest of the first half with the Oaks holding on to a slight 41-38 advantage heading into the locker room.
Menlo would start the second half with a huge 16-4 run in the first 5 minutes that put the game out of reach for the Hawks. Even a strong fourth quarter by the Australian duo of Maddison Zugna and Feller, in which the pair scored 6 points and 5 points respectively, was not enough to overcome the deficit.
Coach Shawn Chaffin had this to say about the game, "Very pleased with our first half. We made some terrific plays against a very good defensive team. But our 3rd quarter was a struggle. Still saw a lot of growth on this road trip for our young team."
Feller and Cynnadie Whatley would pace SDCC with 13 points each and Hogue would lead the defense with 8 rebounds adding 7 points.
