Political analyst Stratievsky tells what allowed Merkel to rule Germany for so long
German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s ability to find compromise solutions and negotiate with the leadership of other countries, as well as German society’s demand for a woman politician, has ensured the Chancellor’s support for many years, Berlin-based political analyst Dmitry Stratievsky said in a conversation with RIA Novosti
“The German politician said: “Merkel has an excellent political sense and ability to find compromises and come to terms with her allies and opponents, but at the same time, if necessary, she can push through the decision she thinks is right. An important role was also played by society’s demand for a woman politician in the leading role in the country, which was new for Germany”, – noted the expert.
Stratievsky reminded that Merkel quickly enough became a member of the Bundestag of the united Germany, soon afterwards became a federal minister and in the next decade headed the largest party in the country.
“Finally, Merkel managed in many ways to reformat the conservatives, to make them close to centrism. Merkel herself is in no small part the epitome of centrist politics; she is ‘leftier’ than any of her four predecessors as CDU chancellor. This has opened up new electoral horizons”, – Stratievsky added.
Today, 26 September, Germany is voting in the Bundestag elections. Current Chancellor Angela Merkel did not run for re-election this time, after 16 years in power. She announced her intentions to retire from politics after the formation of the new cabinet.
