Why Wales’ players stood sideways during national anthem for Euros opener against Switzerland
WALES players stood sideways during the national anthem against Switzerland so they could face their own fans in Baku.
The stadium was mostly empty in Azerbaijan but 2,000 fiercely loyal Welsh fans were in attendance.
And they received the respect of every single player, with the whole team focusing on the fans while singing the anthem.
And like the Italians on Friday night, the Welsh did their anthem proud.
From Gareth Bale to Dan James, each squad member belted out ‘Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau’ [‘Old Land of My Fathers’] ahead of their opening game against the Swiss.
It may have had a positive impact too, as Rob Page’s side managed to get a draw from the match despite being second best for large parts.
Breel Embolo gave Switzerland a second-half lead but a fine header from Cardiff’s Kieffer Moore levelled things up.
The goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with Joe Morrell supplying the perfect cross for Moore to head home.
