Ole Gunnar Solskjaer calls for new signings to catch Manchester City
Manchester United’s loss to Leicester City yesterday handed Manchester City their third Premier League title in four years.
Goals from Luke Thomas and Caglar Soyuncu helped the Foxes earn three points which took them closer to Champions League football next season.
As games come thick and fast for the Red Devils, Solskjaer was forced to field a youthful XI on the pitch with Amad Diallo, Anthony Elanga and Mason Greenwood all starting.
United are having one of the better seasons since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson.
They have almost sealed the second spot on the league table and will compete in the Europa League final against Villarreal in two weeks.
However, City are way ahead of them, and are currently on track to win the treble this season.
They have achieved this despite the likes of Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne missing a significant portion of the campaign.
Raheem Sterling and Ferran Torres have also fallen short of expectations, but City have still found a way to win.
After the Leicester game, Solskjaer called on the board to strengthen the squad if they want to challenge City.
Speaking to BT Sport, the Norweigan said, “If you want to take up the challenge with them, of course, we need to strengthen our squad.
“Congratulations to them. They’ve had a fantastic season.
“I’m very pleased with my boys because they’ve made it into the last 10 days of the season with a Man City team ahead of us that are lauded as the best in Europe.
“We’ve done well but we want to take the next step and it might be that we need a couple more to have a stronger squad.
One of the main reasons behind their success on all fronts is their robust squad depth.
City have two very good players for every position. This helps them to keep the players fresh without compromising the quality of the starting XI.
Solskjaer does not have this luxury. For example, he was forced to start Brandon Williams in place of Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
The young full-back lacked the rhythm and discipline offered by Wan-Bissaka at the back.
By contrast, Guardiola has the option of resting Kyle Walker and bringing a quality player like Joao Cancelo at right-back.
Solskjaer has done a great job since taking over from Jose Mourinho, but the Glazer must back him this summer.
