Warriors sign guard Gary Payton II to second 10-day contract
The Warriors have signed guard Gary Payton II to a second 10-day contract, the team announced Monday.
Since signing an initial 10-day contract, Payton II has appeared in five games for the Warriors this season and averaged 2.4 points, 1.4 rebounds and a steal in 3.7 minutes per game. His best game came against the Oklahoma City Thunder, in which he totaled 10 points and four steals in nine minutes in the fourth quarter of Golden State’s blowout win.
Payton II, 28, impressed the Warriors with his defense-first mentality, cutting ability and maturity. He will be available for Monday’s game in Philadelphia and four more games against Washington, Denver, Sacramento and Dallas before his 10-deal expires.
At that point, the Warriors cannot sign Payton II to another 10-day contract and would have to sign him to a prorated veteran minimum or let him become an unrestricted free agent.
