Pakistan supports peaceful, stable Afghanistan: Qureshi
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Sunday in a telephonic conversation with Afghan Foreign Minister Hanif Atmar said that his country supports the peace process, and a peaceful and stable Afghanistan is in Pakistan’s interest, this is its common desire of his nation to see Afghanistan move towards stability.
Qureshi tweeted about his discussions that Pakistan “support reconciliation in Afghanistan and progress in the peace process, in Istanbul. I look forward to meeting Foreign Minister Atmar at (the) Istanbul Conference and to hosting him in Pakistan soon after to discuss a way forward post-conference,”.
He hoped that the summit will be fruitful and results in lasting peace and that his nation is committed to its consultative and conciliatory assistance in the Afghan peace process between the government and the Taliban.
Both Hanif Atmar and Qureshi agreed to meet in the Istanbul summit.
This comes as Andreas von Brandt, the EU representative for Afghanistan, called on the Taliban to take the upcoming conference in Turkey seriously and urged them to grab this historic opportunity in case the group wants to have cooperation with the international community.
He expressed his hope that “Taliban will not miss this opportunity offered to them in Istanbul” he added “never I would say in the last five years has Afghanistan been again high on the agenda as it has been in recent weeks,” said the EU envoy.
He hinted that the Afghan peace process has never been focused on as it has been given such priority in the past few weeks.
Earlier, Turkey announced that the UN-led peace summit on Afghanistan is scheduled to take place on April 24th.
