The questions left unanswered after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s interview

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s interview with US TV host Oprah Winfrey spelled out many of the reasons why the pair quit as working royals, including allegations of racism and disregard for their mental wellbeing.

But their claims have fuelled a flurry of new questions yet to be addressed by Buckingham Palace, and Ms Winfrey avoided digging into certain topics the couple are known to feel strongly about.

Much attention has been devoted to the pair’s claim that a member of the royal family made racist comments about Archie before he was born.

They said the individual raised ‘concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born’.

The comments prompted calls for the source and nature of the comments to be investigated by Buckingham Palace, but it appears they may never be known.

Ms Winfrey later claimed Harry assured her it was not the Queen or Prince Philip, but the Duke of Sussex, 36, has vowed not to reveal exactly what was said and by whom.

Ms Markle suggested the comments was part of a wider trend, adding: ‘That was relayed to me from Harry, those were conversations the family had with him, and I think it was really hard to be able to see those as compartmentalised conversations.’

This has prompted further speculation that other members of the family may have made similarly discriminatory remarks.

Ms Markle also alleged that she approached ‘one of the most senior people’ for help after experiencing suicidal thoughts but ‘nothing was ever done’.

The comments have also prompted demands for further inquiries by Buckingham Palace, which is remaining silent on the matter.

One of Ms Markle’s most widely-reported claims was that Kate Middleton left her in tears after a disagreement on what her flower girls should wear to the Sussexes’ 2018 wedding. Previous reports had suggested it was the other way round.

She said Kate was ‘upset about some things’ and later apologised, but the question remains open as to what exactly she said to her sister-in-law.

Ms Winfrey also avoided broaching Ms Markle’s estrangement from her father Thomas since her wedding, as well as his publication of a personal letter she sent to him and comments suggesting the Sussexes ‘cheapened’ the royal family by abandoning their official roles.

The 39-year-old said she found it hard to discuss his actions: ‘I genuinely can’t imagine doing anything to intentionally cause pain to my child.’

The TV host also held back from probing Ms Markle on allegations that she bullied several of her royal personal assistants, driving two of them to leave their roles and prompting Buckingham Palace to launch an investigation.

The allegations stem from claims by a senior former aide reported in The Times, and have been dismissed by the Sussexes’ representatives as part of a smear campaign.

But questions remain as to how Ms Markle sees the specifics of the claims and her relationships with those assistants.

Buckingham Palace has reportedly ruled out engaging in ‘tit-for-tat’ over the claims and is said to be focusing on making sure the Queen is ‘fully briefed’ before deciding how to respond.
