Trump comes to the defense of GOP senator who voted to acquit him
President Donald Trump is no longer allowed on Twitter, but sent out a tweet-like statement of support on Thursday for one of the GOP senators who voted to acquit him of inciting the fatal insurrection.
"Twelve days after Kansas Republican Sen. Jerry Moran acquitted former President Donald Trump for incitement of insurrection, he received Trump's endorsement for re-election. Trump made the announcement Thursday evening. Moran will run for a third Senate term in 2022 in a state that went for Trump by double digits in two elections," The Kansas City Star reports.
The endorsement read much like the Twitter endorsements Trump used to offer, complete with bizarre capitalization.
"Senator Jerry Moran is doing a terrific job for the wonderful people of Kansas. Strong on Military, Vets, the Border, and our Second Amendment, Jerry has my Complete and Total Endorsement for his re-election in 2022!" Trump said.
The endorsement may have saved Moran's political career.
"The endorsement comes after speculation that Moran could be vulnerable to a Trump-backed primary challenge. The Clay County Republican Party censured him earlier this month for upholding President Joe Biden's victory. Trump's early support likely forecloses the possibility of an insurgent candidate challenging Moran from the right. But coming less than two weeks after the impeachment trial it also underscores the role Trump's continued influence over the party played in his acquittal," The Star reported.
