Eddie Jones challenges boring England to again be ‘one of the most damaging teams in the world’ after Scotland flop

EDDIE JONES challenged boring England to get back to being ‘one of the most-damaging teams in the world’.

After losing their opening Six Nations game to Scotland, this Saturday is a free hit against awful Italy – a side that hasn’t won a Championship game since 2015 and who have NEVER beaten England.

And under-fire Jones, who has yet to mastermind a performance since the 2019 World Cup semi-final win against New Zealand, urged his side to bounce back against the Azzurri.

The Aussie boss said: “Last week we got the information wrong, we’ve just tried to get the information right this week, which can get us back playing on the front foot, playing front-foot rugby.

“That’s when we’re at our best, that’s when we are one of the most damaging teams in the world and that’s what we want to get back to.

“We want to play good English rugby, where we are as close to our best as we can be.

“That involves having a good set piece, good defence and then being able to take those opportunities as they come in attack and turn them into points.

“We want to be on the front foot the whole time and that pack allows us to do that, and then the backs have got to be able to take those opportunities and turn them into points and that’s the priority this week.”

“We’re only worried about ourselves, we’re not too worried about Italy. We’re coming off a disappointing loss against Scotland, so we’ve really focused on ourselves.”

Jones stripped skipper Owen Farrell of his preferred fly-half shirt and handed George Ford the keys to the attack, with Farrell at inside centre.

But Ollie Lawrence, who Jones talked up last week, was dropped altogether after touching the ball just ONCE against Scotland.

“It was a difficult game for him,” said Jones.

“But he’s a young guy who is learning his trade. This is all part of learning his trade. He is going to be a great player for us. We just think this is the right balance for the game.

“We know that George and Owen operate well at 10 and 12. We’d like to get Sladey into the game more, so we think this is the right balance for this game.”

In the pack Jones also ripped up his powder-puff front-row that failed to lay a glove on the Scots.

So in comes Mako Vunipola, Luke Cowan-Dickie and Kyle Sinckler.

And Jones added: “They bring a lot of experience and nous. The scrum has traditionally been difficult against Italy and we expect the same on Saturday.

“So they’ll bring their scrummaging, plus their aggression and calmness. We’re pleased to have Mako and Kyle back into the team.”
