Death Toll Rises in Indonesian Earthquake
Indonesian rescuers are retrieving more bodies from the ruined homes and buildings as a 6.2 magnitude earthquake shook Indonesia.
The National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesperson, Raditya Jati reported that the number of deaths has exceeded 56 people after an earthquake hit the city on Friday.
A 6.2 magnitude earthquake shook the Mamuju and Majene district on Sulawesi Island, Indonesia on Friday night, Jan 15th.
The quake’s epicenter was considered to be at the “36 kilometers south of the Mamuju” and it had a relatively “shallow depth of 18 kilometers”, TRT World News reported.
According to the recent estimations of the agency, a total of 47 people died in Mamuju and 9 people in Majene.
Thousands of island residents were left homeless and more than 800 had been injured in the natural disaster.
The Mitigation and National Disaster Agency said that still more people are receiving treatment for serious injuries, and the military is trying to fix the ruptured roads to ease the access of relief goods.
Meanwhile, heavy flooding in the neighboring Kalimantan this week in Indonesia’s section of Borneo Island has killed 5 people while dozens more are missing, TRT news reports.
Heavy flooding occurred in the hundreds of kilometers north of the quake disaster in Sulawesi Island, Indonesia.
It is said that another volcanic eruption may occur close to the JAVA Island of Indonesian territory.
Recent reports indicated the quake’s death toll has reached 73 individuals.
