Arsenal star Gabriel Martinelli to have scan on ankle injury today with Thomas Partey and Gabriel set to return

ARSENAL star Gabriel Martinelli had a scan on his injured ankle today.

The Brazilian, 19, missed the weekend FA Cup win over Newcastle after sustaining the problem during the warm-up.

The Brazilian winger turned his ankle in a nasty incident during the warm-up on Saturday

Reiss Nelson replaced Martinelli in the starting XI and Mikel Arteta revealed he was ‘in tears and lots of pain’ as a result of the nasty turn.

Speaking on Monday ahead of Thursday’s home clash with Crystal Palace, the Gunners boss confirmed the winger was being assessed.

Arteta said: “We don’t know how bad he is. He’s getting a scan this morning.

“We didn’t look after the game because he was in a lot of pain but yesterday he tested it a little bit better, so let’s hope.

“We have a scan today so let’s hope it’s not as serious and we can have Gabi back really soon.

“Hopefully it’s not that bad and it doesn’t knock Gabi back but I was gutted for him because he was in pain and he was gutted.

“We will know more tomorrow, certainly.”

Martinelli missed six months of action following surgery for knee cartilage damage in June before returning to the side in December.

He was also out of action for a few weeks at the end of 2019 with a hamstring problem but Arteta is confident he will not be an injury-prone player.

The Arsenal chief added: “It’s more bad luck. It’s only three injuries and they’re really different ones.

“One was a contact and the other one was something that can happen to anybody, so you have to be really unlucky.”

But while Arteta looks as though he may be without one Brazilian Gabriel, the other is expected back in training imminently.

Defender Gabriel Magalhaes tested positive for coronavirus at the end of December so had to self-isolate.

He is now cleared to return while Thomas Partey, who has struggled with a thigh injury, is back in full training and could feature against the Eagles on Thursday.

Arteta added: “Gabriel had a training session the other day. He tested positive and had very mild symptoms, so he’s missed a few weeks of training because he had to be isolated.

“It’s better now and we expect him to be training with us in the next couple of days and then make an assessment on whether we can have him or not on Thursday.

“Thomas has been in full training for the last four or five days, he’s completely asymptomatic.

“It would have been a little bit rushed to try and play him against Newcastle but I think he will be ready for Thursday.”
