Mum-of-eight ‘extremely ill’ in hospital fighting Covid
A mum-of-eight has been taken to hospital by ambulance after falling ‘extremely ill’ with Covid-19.
Marie Buchan was admitted late on Saturday night as her condition deteriorated after she fell ill five days ago.
Her teenage daughter raised the alarm via 111 and the operator sent an ambulance to her home in Birmingham.
Marie, 39, is currently in Birmingham Queen Elizabeth Hospital with her family waiting anxiously for news.
She had been isolating in her bedroom while her children aged between six and 18 tried to keep their distance at their four-bedroom housing association property in Selly Oak.
Her symptoms have included breathlessness, fits of coughing, a sore throat and nose bleeds.
Marie’s representative, Barry Tomes, told Metro.co.uk: ‘Marie has been ill for about five days.
‘On Saturday her daughter called an ambulance and they wanted to admit her but she refused at first. Sadly late in the night she deteriorated and ambulance was sent by 111.
‘She was admitted late at night.
‘At the moment she is in hospital and extremely ill.
‘We would like to thank people for their concern.’
The octomum said on her Instagram account that had been suffering severe symptoms.
She wrote that she didn’t like to complain but had been suffering vomiting ‘and not even able to hold just a small amount of water down’.
Marie also said she had been vomiting blood and ‘this has thrown me big time’.
She wrote: ‘I pray this leaves my body soon my patience running out.’
Earlier in the week the Brummie had also described having a cough, loss of taste and smell and nose bleeds.
Marie said she was ‘highly agitated’ and was getting ‘weaker by the day’.
Her eldest daughter, 18, also tested positive for Covid-19 and had been isolating in a next-door bedroom.
Before being admitted to hospital, Marie told BirminghamLive: ‘It is just a complete nightmare. I feel absolutely awful. I started getting symptoms on Saturday like a sore throat and started to feel breathless but I didn’t think it was Covid at first.
‘I was advised by my doctor to get a test which I did on the Monday and it proved to be positive for Covid.
‘I am now isolating upstairs in my bedroom. I have gradually felt worse and worse over the last few days.’
‘As well as the sore throat, breathlessness and coughing fits i have had several nose bleeds which i never normally get.
Marie was initially told to self-isolate for 10 days.
She said: ‘Fortunately the older children have really stepped up to the plate and have been helping with everything. They have been bringing me food upstairs and leaving it outside my door.
‘I have been told i have to isolate for 10 days which could increase to another 10 days if i am still displaying symptoms.
‘I have been speaking to track and trace a lot. You are trying to remember everywhere you have been and people you have come into contact with.’
Before being struck down with Covid, Marie had been hoping to mark the new year with a break to Alicante.
She had defended the trip on the grounds that she needed a break after the pressure of looking after her children at home during the coronavirus pandemic.
The single mum has previously said sexism has held her back from pursuing a career as a mechanic after gaining a Level 2 diploma in the trade.
The former lap-dancer also told This Morning that life was better on benefits than working. She then came under fire for spending £2,500 on breast augmentation surgery at a private clinic in Turkey.
