I tried to give my sister in-law advice for carrying for her baby but she exploded
DEAR DEIDRE: I’VE been trying to help my sister-in-law with suggestions about how she could better care for my baby niece – but she blew up at me the other day.
She and my brother had their daughter six weeks ago.

The baby hasn’t settled well and they’ve had lots of sleepless nights.
They are both 30 and I’m a single woman of 35.
I used to work as a nanny so I’ve been trying to offer them advice.
For example, a settled routine at bedtime would help, rather than having her fall asleep on one of them in front of the TV.
I met my sister-in-law in the park for a walk with the buggy. I told her the baby needed to be wrapped up more warmly.
My sister-in-law is normally very calm but she had a meltdown and said she’s sick of me telling her what to do.
Being shouted at brought back memories of being bullied at school and I still feel upset.
DEIDRE SAYS: It seems that your sister-in-law is exhausted.
It is extremely stressful looking after your own first-born baby.

You mean well but it’s always a good plan to avoid giving unasked-for advice.
The best help is to offer to take the baby off her hands for a few hours to give her a regular break.
