First-time mum dies from blood clot hours after giving birth to son
A family have paid tribute to an aspiring midwife who died hours after giving birth to her first child.
Chelsea Pearce, 29, from from Halifax, West Yorks, had just become the ‘mum she had always dreamed of being’ when she suffered a blood clot.
She had planned to have a cesarean on December 4 due to an underlying lung condition, but was rushed to Calderdale Royal Hospital on Friday after her waters broke.
She then gave birth to son Roman without any apparent complications, but a midwife later found she had collapsed while getting up to go to the toilet. It was discovered she had a blood clot, which had moved to her heart.
Medics managed to revive her, but her heart stopped shortly afterwards. She was then given treatment to thin the blood clot and underwent an emergency hysterectomy, but died later that evening.
Chelsea’s mum Colette Pearce, 57, said she felt like her heart had been ‘ripped out’ by her daughter’s death. She went on: ‘This was her first baby, she wanted to become a mother so much.
‘She was baby orientated, working as a health visitor, having trained to be a midwife. She would talk to him at night, holding her stomach. She just couldn’t wait to have him.’
Rhea Procter, 21, a close friend of Chelsea and her brother’s girlfriend, also described how being a mum had been ‘her dream’ and ‘all she ever wanted’.
She went on: ‘Everything in her life revolved around babies, she just wanted to be a mum. She has four nieces and nephews, she treated every one of them as her own.
‘She was a beautiful person, selfless and thought of everyone else no matter what.’

Discussing newborn Roman, Rhea added: ‘He’s absolutely fine, Chelsea is drilled into him. He’s taken to his bottle already, Chelsea would’ve been proud.
‘Her partner, Robbie, 29, is distraught and is desperate to follow everything she told him to do. She asked him to look after her little boy, and that’s exactly what he’s doing.’
